Managed Infrastructure and DevOps

Containerized hosting, automated deployments, Kubernetes and managed PostgreSQL for web applications, run and watched around the clock by the team that builds them.

Managed infrastructure and DevOps is the work of hosting, deploying and operating web applications so they stay fast, secure and recoverable. 1REALTOUR runs containerized hosting, CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes clusters and highly available PostgreSQL in-house, and offers the same practices to clients. It is for businesses with a custom application, client portal or busy store that has outgrown basic shared hosting.

Containers and repeatable deployments

We package each application as a container image built from its source code. The same image runs in testing and production, which removes the problem of code that works on one server and fails on another. Configuration and secrets are kept out of the code and injected at runtime from a managed secrets store.

Every change goes through a CI/CD pipeline. Tests and security scans run automatically, an image is built and tagged with the exact code version, and the deployment is recorded. If a release causes problems, rolling back means redeploying the previous image, not rebuilding a server by hand.

Kubernetes when it is warranted

Kubernetes runs containers across several servers, restarts failed workloads automatically and spreads traffic. It is a good fit for applications that need high availability, several services working together or frequent releases. It is more than a single small site needs, and we say so. Simpler workloads run on a single managed container host or a managed application platform where that is the better match.

  • Infrastructure defined as code and kept in version control
  • Rolling updates with health checks before traffic moves
  • Separate staging and production environments
  • Automatic TLS certificates and managed DNS
  • Resource limits so one service cannot starve another

Managed PostgreSQL

Most custom applications we build store their data in PostgreSQL. We run it with replication so a standby can take over if the primary server fails, connection pooling for busy applications, and continuous backups that allow recovery to a point in time. Database upgrades and schema migrations are planned and tested on a copy first. Access is limited to the application and named administrators, connections are encrypted, and slow queries are tracked so performance problems are found before users feel them.

Operations that do not depend on luck

Hosting is only managed if someone is watching it. Our infrastructure practice includes 24/7 uptime monitoring with alerts, centralized logs, security monitoring, operating system patching, encrypted off-site backups with tested restores, and single sign-on for administrative access. Changes to production go through the pipeline and are logged, so there is a record of who changed what.

You keep ownership of your code, data and domain. We document the environment so another competent team could take it over, and we can work alongside your in-house developers rather than replacing them. Your developers keep pushing code the way they do today, and the pipeline handles building, testing and releasing it.

How we work

  1. Step 1

    Assess

We review your application, current hosting, traffic, data and recovery needs.

  2. Step 2

    Design

We choose the right level of infrastructure, from a single container host to Kubernetes.

  3. Step 3

    Migrate

We containerize the application, build the pipeline and move data with a tested cutover plan.

  4. Step 4

    Operate

We monitor, patch, back up and scale the environment and report on its health.

Technologies we use

Frequently asked questions

What does managed infrastructure include?
Managed infrastructure from 1REALTOUR includes hosting, automated deployments, database management, monitoring, backups, security patching and incident response for a web application. The client keeps ownership of the code, data and domains.
Does my application need Kubernetes?
Many applications do not need Kubernetes. Kubernetes suits applications that need high availability, several cooperating services or frequent releases. 1REALTOUR recommends simpler container hosting when it meets the need.
What is CI/CD?
CI/CD stands for continuous integration and continuous delivery. It is an automated pipeline that tests code, builds a deployable version and releases it in a consistent, recorded way. It makes releases safer and rollbacks faster.
Can 1REALTOUR host an application built by another developer?
1REALTOUR can host and operate applications built by other developers after reviewing the code and its dependencies. The application is containerized and moved onto a monitored, backed-up environment.
How is PostgreSQL kept available and recoverable?
1REALTOUR runs PostgreSQL with replication to a standby server, connection pooling and continuous backups that support point-in-time recovery. Restores are tested on a schedule so recovery steps are known to work.
