Backup and Disaster Recovery

Encrypted off-site backups of your websites, databases and files, restores tested on a schedule, and a written plan for getting back online.

Backup and disaster recovery is the combination of copies of your data and a tested plan for using them. 1REALTOUR backs up websites, databases, application files and business software following the 3-2-1 approach, encrypts copies stored off-site, and tests restores on a schedule. It is for any business that would be hurt by losing its site, store orders, customer records or documents.

Backups only count if they restore

Many businesses discover their backups are incomplete on the day they need them. The plugin stopped running months ago, the database was excluded, or the only copy sat on the same server that failed. CISA's ransomware guidance recommends keeping offline, encrypted backups of critical data and regularly testing their availability and integrity. We build backups around that idea.

The 3-2-1 approach

  • Three copies of important data: the live copy and two backups
  • Two different storage systems, so one failure cannot take out both
  • One copy off-site, in a separate location and account from production

Off-site copies are encrypted before they leave the server, and the backup storage uses separate credentials so an attacker who reaches the website cannot delete its backups. Where possible, backups are kept in an immutable or versioned form for a retention period.

What we back up

  • Website files, themes, plugins and uploaded media
  • Databases, including continuous backups for busy applications
  • Store orders, customer accounts and product data
  • Self-hosted business software such as CRM, help desk and e-signature data
  • Configuration, DNS records and deployment settings needed to rebuild

Backup frequency and retention are set by how much data you can afford to lose and how far back you may need to go. A store taking orders all day needs more frequent database backups than a brochure site that changes once a month.

Tested restores and monitoring

On a schedule, we restore backups into a separate environment and check that the site loads, logins work and recent data is present. Results are recorded so you have evidence, not assumptions. We also time each restore, so the recovery plan is based on how long a restore really takes rather than a guess. Every backup job also reports in when it finishes, and an alert fires if a job fails or does not run.

A written recovery plan

A recovery plan answers practical questions before an emergency: who decides to restore, which systems come back first, where the restored site will run, how DNS gets switched and who tells customers. We write the plan with you, agree on recovery time and data loss targets for each system, and keep a copy outside the systems it describes. After ransomware, a hacked site or a failed server, the plan turns a crisis into a checklist. We review it at least once a year and whenever a major system changes, so it never describes servers that no longer exist.

What's included

  • Backup inventory of sites, databases and apps
  • Automated daily or continuous backups
  • Encrypted off-site copies
  • Separate credentials for backup storage
  • Retention and versioning policy
  • Scheduled restore tests with records
  • Alerts for failed or missed backups
  • Written disaster recovery plan

How we work

  1. Step 1

    Inventory

We list every system and the data that matters, and how much loss each can tolerate.

  2. Step 2

    Implement

We set up automated backups, encryption, off-site storage and retention.

  3. Step 3

    Test

We perform restores into a separate environment and record the results.

  4. Step 4

    Plan

We write and review a recovery plan with clear roles and steps.

  5. Step 5

    Maintain

We monitor backup jobs, retest restores and update the plan as systems change.

Technologies we use

Frequently asked questions

What is the 3-2-1 backup rule?
The 3-2-1 backup rule means keeping three copies of important data, on two different storage systems, with one copy off-site. It protects against a single hardware failure, a site-wide incident or an attack that reaches the main server.
How does 1REALTOUR know backups will work?
1REALTOUR restores backups into a separate environment on a schedule and checks that the site loads, logins work and recent data is present. The results of each restore test are recorded.
Are website backups protected from ransomware?
Website backups from 1REALTOUR are encrypted, stored off-site and protected by separate credentials from the production server. That separation means an attacker who compromises the website cannot easily delete or encrypt its backups.
What is a disaster recovery plan?
A disaster recovery plan is a written set of steps for restoring systems after a major failure, attack or data loss. It defines who decides, which systems are restored first, where they will run and how customers are informed.
Can 1REALTOUR back up self-hosted business software?
1REALTOUR backs up self-hosted business software such as CRM, help desk, automation and e-signature applications, including their databases and stored files, and includes them in restore tests. Restoring an application means bringing back both the database and the uploaded files, so both are captured together.
